Of the weekend: Dining last night at Caffe Allora, wow; now my favorite Italian restaurant in Portland. Intimate, casual, exactly right for what Din and I wanted, an on-the-fly dinner while walking through the Pearl on a windy night: arugula salad with bresaola; lovely ravioli stuffed with wild mushrooms or (mmm) pumpkin, in sage butter; a nice bottle of wine. Just easy to be there.
Transsiberian, oh oh oh, you need to go, I don't want to give away one snippet except to say, this movie thrills, and that what the characters do deeply, deeply makes sense, especially the last bedside-bequeathed gift. Oh, the defiance; the stories we tell ourselves.
I will reveal my worse self to say, I am fascinated by the unsubstantiated rumor that Republican VP nominee Sarah Palin's youngest child is actually her grandchild, an assertion most assiduously reported by Daily Kos. It could be an attempted smear job, and I do agree it would be highly unusual for a teenager to give birth to a baby with Down's Syndrome. As for the governor flying 12 hours while in labor: my labor lasted three days and I could've taken a plane trip, albeit one attended by a lot of moaning. Anyway, we'll see.
Palin at six months

And I used to take you seriously....won't make that mistake again.

I'm not surprised Transsiberian is good; Emily Mortimer is one terrific actress.

She was great, and just as great, maybe greater, is that she was the lead. I don't keep a scorecard as to how many women get leads in movies, but I will say it's been a long time since I've seen a movie (esp. a thriller) where a woman was allowed to so fully play such a complicated and not entirely trustworthy character.
